How much of a time commitment is required to be an Advocate?
Display Advocates place four to six displays a year; all other Advocates seek at least four opportunities per year to speak in front of a church, small group or organization. All Advocates participate in "Food for the Hungry Sunday" every October, and visit with a Regional Manager by phone once a month.

Is there a position open in my community?
Yes, Advocates serve in their own community, advocating among the churches, organizations and people they know.

Why are FH Advocates important?
Food for the Hungry Advocates are vital to the struggle against world poverty because they mobilize other people to get involved. Advocates raise awareness and make an impact at the grassroots level in cities all across America.

How do Advocates get others involved in the fight against poverty?
There are many ways to advocate. Here are 50 ideas:
  1. Host a movie night. Invite your friends to watch a movie that focuses on global issues such as poverty, hunger or injustice. Encourage a group discussion after the movie, and present child sponsorship as a way for them to get involved. This could be a strictly educational evening or you could charge a "fee" that would go toward a specific project. Possible movies: Ghosts of Rwanda, Hotel Rwanda, Soldier Child or Sometimes in April.

  2. Have a party! Ask a neighborhood restaurant to donate appetizers or desserts. You may charge your guests $15 $20 or $50, or ask for donations and let them know that all proceeds go to a country or project of your choice. You could also present child sponsorship. See www.HostADinner.com for more ideas.

  3. Have a potluck dinner with foreign foods and lead a discussion about needs around the world. Organize an international potluck dinner. Encourage your friends to prepare typical dishes from other cultures or countries. Then lead a discussion about needs around the world.
