Bangladesh is one of the world's poorest, most densely populated and least developed nations. The government launched reforms in the 1990s to establish a more open, market-based economy and to accelerate economic growth. However, massive flooding in 1998 destroyed most of the rice crop, shattering the economic progress being made. Nearly 30 million people were affected by the floods, and the impact is still being felt today.
These heavy rains bring despair. Monsoons regularly swell the mighty rivers that run through the country and devastate the country with flooding. This, coupled with unsanitary conditions and the resultant widespread dysentery, tuberculosis, leprosy and malaria--not to mention one of the highest birthrates in the world--contribute to the extreme poverty here.
Bangladesh was Food for the Hungry's first country of operation, and we have been there for over 30 years. |
