Use this resource page to learn more about what we are doing in Bangladesh, and how you can help us meet spiritual and physical hungers …

Bangladesh is one of the world's poorest, most densely populated and least developed nations. The government launched reforms in the 1990s to establish a more open, market-based economy and to accelerate economic growth.  However, massive flooding in 1998 destroyed most of the rice crop, shattering the economic progress being made. Nearly 30 million people were affected by the floods, and the impact is still being felt today.

These heavy rains bring despair. Monsoons regularly swell the mighty rivers that run through the country and devastate the country with flooding. This, coupled with unsanitary conditions and the resultant widespread dysentery, tuberculosis, leprosy and malaria--not to mention one of the highest birthrates in the world--contribute to the extreme poverty here.

Bangladesh was Food for the Hungry's first country of operation, and we have been there for over 30 years.

how we are meeting needs in bangladesh:

Human Resource Development Program
Problem: The Khoksha District, a rural region on the far western edge of the country, suffers from yearly flooding and its resulting economic and agricultural hardships.

Solution: To work with 1,600 persons in five communities. Savings and learning groups were formed with the families and skills training introduced for the adults. Leaders are being identified and trained to solve problems within their communities.

Child Development Program
Problem: Little opportunity for children to gain a good education as well as a lack of development in government schools.

Solution: Teachers will meet guardians to encourage better school attendance in the children. Coaching will be provided to improve the chances for success for some children in examinations. Those children with medical emergencies will receive treatment, and an annual health exam will be provided for all children, with follow-up treatment as needed. Guardians will also take a health workshop. Mentoring, counseling and monitoring services will be conducted for adolescents. An estimated 3,000 beneficiaries from 36 communities will participate in this program.

Horijan Primary School
Problem: Poor children from untouchable class in Horija community need education and health treatment.

Solution: Provide facilities for schools to meet in as well as provide materials for the schools and assistance for the families there. Some supplies and services they are providing are books, school materials, medical support, health check ups, coaching, and regular parent teacher meetings. These leaders are working with four communities that will benefit about 2000 children and families.

Chandpur Child Development Program
Problem: Alcoholism, underemployment and immorality characterize three small Horijon sweeper communities in Chandpur.

Solution: Christian staff will influence people in these communities to move beyond their present lifestyle by encouraging group formation, savings and skills development. These staffers have reached about 1,500 children and adults.
