Use this resource page to learn more about what we are doing in the Dominican Republic, and how you can help us meet spiritual and physical hungers …
The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, which was explored and claimed by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492. Haiti occupies the island's western third. The island is vulnerable to hurricanes every June to October.
The Dominican Republic's economy has experienced dramatic growth over the last decade. Although the economy continues to grow at a respectable rate, unemployment remains an important challenge. The country suffers from marked income inequality. The poorest half of the population receives less than one-fifth of GNP, while the richest 10 percent enjoy nearly 40 percent of national income.
Child Development Programs Problem: Children who have been sponsored are leaving the program without vocational skills to generate income to sustain their education.
Solution:
FH will provide 40 scholarships to CDP children, 10 scholarships to FHI staff, 3 sets of technical books and learning equipment for staff.
Vocational training courses will be conducted at each level.
Church Program Problem: The communities lack churches with a holistic ministry. This is preventing the neediest families from being assisted with compassion and preventing community leaders from making moral decisions.
Solution:
FH trains pastors and church leaders in biblical worldview, kingdom of God, and church leadership and development.
FH conducts training events for pastors and church leaders.
Water Sanitation Programs Problem: The lack of potable water and basic sanitation causes many different illnesses in the population. Children under five suffer from high levels of diarrhea, parasitic infections and malnutrition.
Solution:
FH trains project volunteers, including health committees and other volunteers.
FH conducts community meetings on health issues.
FH health volunteers conduct home visits to educate families.
FH constructs latrines and provides technical training on latrine construction and garbage disposal.
Personal Development Program Problem: People in many communities are not equipped to mature fully in spiritual, physical and social/emotional areas.
Solution: Give children extra teaching in biblical worldview and health; give youth vocational training; teach adults in preventative health care; train local church leadership in holistic ministry; enlist community leaders in projects to improve living conditions.
