Food for the Hungry is pleased to announce the launch of operations in Haiti. Operating from Port au Prince, Food for the Hungry Haiti will be focused on health program initiatives designed to combat HIV/AIDS and will include the following responses:
- Abstinence and faithfulness training and education to prevent transmission of HIV, especially among the youth.
- Home-based care, nutrition and hygiene education, counseling services and the application of immunizations and antibiotics for those infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.
- Special training, support, and emergency relief for orphans and vulnerable children faced with great hardship due to the HIV/AIDS crisis.
In addition to coordinating with Food for the Hungry's nearby Child Development office in the Dominican Republic (5 minutes from the border of Haiti), Food for the Hungry staff will walk with more than 150 churches in Haiti to equip them to reach out in their communities and meet the physical and spiritual needs of community members.
This approach – to help communities pursue development with their own resources – is the approach Food for the Hungry takes in impoverished communities around the world. As churches reach out to meet physical and spiritual needs, leaders solve community problems, and families are equipped to meet one another's needs, sustainable transformation occurs.
In addition to Haiti, Food for the Hungry's Latin American field offices also include Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Peru.

how we are meeting needs in haiti:
Church Development Programs
Problem: Lack of evangelical churches ministering holistically to their members and communities.
Solution: Operating in 25 communities to benefit about 250 people through:
- Training workshops for pastors and church leaders.
- Community leaders committing to serve their communities motivated by biblical principles.
- Approximately 125 families receiving assistance from local churches.
- Encouraging believers to take leadership roles in their communities.
