Use this resource page to learn more about what we are doing in Kenya, and how you can help us meet spiritual and physical hungers …

Kenya is an east African country named for Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa. Kenya is a diverse country, with many different people groups and cultures represented. Over 30 million Kenyans are grouped into more than 70 ethnic tribes. Eight out of ten Kenyans, mostly farmers, live in dispersed rural settlements. The remaining population is concentrated in the urban areas of Nairobi (the capital) and Mombassa.

Ethnic division, drought, poverty and AIDS account for many of Kenya's problems. With one of the highest rates of population growth in the world, exacerbated by recurring drought, Kenya no longer is able to feed itself and imports large quantities of food.

Food for the Hungry began working in Kenya in 1976 and runs many long-term development programs.

Solution: Providing to approximately 20,000 beneficiaries in 13 communities through:
Solving problems synergistically with other FH programs.
Educating youth about AIDS.
Assisting high school students in Bible study.
Rehabilitating school buildings.
Training community leaders in church development.
Meeting water needs of communities with acute water shortage.

Livestock Program
Problem: Lack of livestock trading and income in certain communities.

Solution: The program will benefit 65,000 people in 15 communities by:
Establishing sustainable goat breeding and trading of goat milk.
Promoting community-based veterinary service through training.
Promoting livestock marketing by training livestock traders and building market infrastructures.

HIV/AIDS Programs
Problem: HIV/AIDS pandemic is eating at the fabric of Kenyan society and is directly affecting the social and spiritual life of the people.

Solution: To enhance the capacity of churches, community leaders and families to initiate and strengthen HIV/AIDS prevention and control interventions, and to help improve/restore the lives of people affected and infected by AIDS (approximately 34,000 people) by:
Focusing on behavior change in order to reduce the effect and impact of HIV/AIDS and ensure healthier, more productive lives.
Educating people about HIV/AIDS.
Changing people's attitudes and increasing their life skills.
Providing care, setting up support systems, and counseling will be implemented.

Problem: Medical personnel and church and community leaders in the Mount Kenya and Nairobi districts do not have the capacity to handle problems associated with HIV/AIDS.

Solution: Community resource persons will be trained to disseminate prevention and control messages; testing and counseling will be provided; affected households will be linked to other services; and better home-based care and support services will be promoted

Food Security Programs
Problem: Recurrent droughts and lack of good agricultural practices.

Solution: Increase agricultural production through increasing the number of farms with improved agricultural practices in 15 communities by:
Training beneficiaries in improved agricultural practices.
Training leaders in environmental management and leadership roles.

Relief
Problem: Prolonged drought continues to cause animal death, high child malnutrition rates, drying of water sources, reduced availability of food and poor livestock conditions. When it does rain, there is often flooding, leading to loss of life.

Solution: Relief and rehabilitation for over 100,000 beneficiaries through:
Implementing early warning systems for flood, famine and drought.
Supporting the thousands of families that become victims of disasters each year.
Educating people on how to prevent the effects of disease.
Renovating dams and repairing water pans.

Health Program
Problem: Women and children in Marsabit district are victims of disease and malnutrition.

Solution: Addressing underlying causes of disease and malnutrition through nutrition education, growth monitoring, disease prevention education, health assessment and first-aid treatment for children, and providing iron supplements and de-wormers for contact farmers. Working in seven communities with approximately 70,000 people.

Education Program
Problem:Although the government provides free basic education, it cannot support the schools financially. As a result, school attendance is very low.

Solution: The following program will be implemented in 14 communities benefiting 12,000 people:
Introducing functional adult education for caretakers who protect children during the day from wild animals.
Access to food increases a child’s consistency in attending classes, resulting to improve enrollment in school. Food for the Hungry will be providing hot meals to schools in these communities, along with training for school workers on safe and hygienic ways of handling food.
Implementing hygiene and sanitation education among school-age children, families and communities.

Water Program
Problem: Lack of water is blamed for the existence and spread of numerous diseases.

Solution: This program will be implemented by:
Drilling wells in targeted communities, constructing dams and water pans.
Educating target communities in proper hygiene.
