redarrow.gif6:8 Sunday

Join us October 19, 2008!
6:8 Sunday (formerly Food for the Hungry Sunday) is an annual opportunity to educate your church on the needs of the poor around the world and challenge them to get involved. On October 19th, 2008 churches around the United States will participate in 6:8 Sunday, providing ways for Christians to serve the poor and make a difference in the lives of children and families living in extreme poverty. 6:8 Sunday, is a way for your church to embrace the mandate of Micah 6:8

    He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
    But to do justice
    To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God.

Consider hosting 6:8 Sunday with your congregation, Bible study group, Sunday School class or other small groups. Food for the Hungry provides the resources necessary to make 6:8 Sunday an inspiring, challenging time for your group. Your group can choose to focus on HIV/AIDS affected areas or any number of developing countries around the world.

Call 1-800-248-6437, and ask about hosting a 6:8 Sunday today.

redarrow.gifCommunity to Community (C2C)

FH’s Community to Community (C2C) partnership is a relationship between a community in the developing world and an American church. By getting personally involved with the poor, churches are able to work towards lasting change within the context of a strong relationship. FH strives to facilitate true transformation for both the American church and the international partner community.
Call 1-800-248-6437, and ask about starting a C2C partnership with your church today.

redarrow.gifDisaster Relief Simulation

Food for the Hungry’s Disaster Relief Simulation is a 70 minute interactive learning experience that introduces participants to the world of relief work. Set in the fictional country of Nida, participants assume the role of relief workers and disaster victims just after a 7.0 earthquake has struck. Small groups, churches, mission teams, youth groups, missions conference attendees, Christian schools and other groups have participated in the Disaster Relief Simulation. The easy to use kit guides you through the activity without requiring a lot of outside preparation, and works best with 10-30 participants. To order a kit, call 1-800- 2-HUNGERS and ask for the advocate ministry, or check “Disaster Relief Simulation” on the information request form.

“The Disaster Relief Simulation really helped bring alive the complex and heart-rending issues of responding effectively to a disaster. I learned a lot, and had a lot of fun!” Jill Ashley, Charlottesville, VA

redarrow.gifKIDS TALK ABOUT GOD" - ARTS FESTIVAL

Many pastors often wonder, 'Who are the best evangelists in my church? I believe we know the answer. Children. What if you had a proven way to create a forum for the most imaginative evangelists to pack the pews?

"Kids Talk About God" Arts Festivals will lead your church through a weekend of fun-filled activities, a Mission Explorers Video Series and evangelistic training specifically designed for children. The goal of each festival is to present the gospel in the context of children’s faith expressions. In addition to reaching out to your community, arts festivals provide opportunities for children to have their work considered for national distribution in Carey Kinsolving’s columns, books and videos. Carey Kinsolving, syndicated columnist, author, speaker and producer, will bless you and the children of your church in ways you can’t imagine.
Give your children a chance to share their faith through art, and gain new insight into evangelism and missions.

Call 1-800-2HUNGER (800-248-6437), ext. 1131, to book your "Kids Talk About God" Arts Festival today.

redarrow.gifHunger Banquet

Many Americans do not know the extent to which hunger is a life-and-death struggle to most of the world's people. A Hunger Banquet helps you teach through firsthand experience. You will answer such questions as:

  • Who are the world’s hungry?
  • How does God care for the poor?
  • Why are people hungry?
  • Is Christian action important?
  • What does the Bible say about the poor and the hungry?

By handing out tickets you will separate your group into three societies: upper, middle and lower classes. This distinction will determine the rest of the banquet. Upper-class people will get a full meal with fine linens. Middle-class will eat a smaller meal on paper plates. Lower-class people get very little.
The experience -- and the Bible teaching that follows -- can be life changing!
Your Hunger Banquet can have a lasting impact. Your group will experience world conditions in a way most Americans never will. The discussion and Bible study provided with your Hunger Banquet kit help your group learn how they minister to the poor. Through a single meal, your group can:

  • Experience the disparity in world food distribution
  • Better understand God’s love and care for the poor
  • Increase their awareness of Christian missions
  • Commit to effective stewardship of church and personal resources
  • Get involved in local and international missions

To order your Hunger Banquet materials, call 1-800-2 HUNGER, ext.1131.

redarrow.gifHungry Decisions

Making Life-and-Death Choices

In Africa, Asia or Latin America

"A large proportion of the world’s population goes to bed hungry every night." Though we have heard this many times, most of us cannot comprehend it. We cannot fathom the suffering.

On the following pages you will take the part of a man or woman who is trying to eke out a living in a poor rural area of a developing nation. At the end of each page you will face a difficult decision between two courses of action. Your choice of one or the other will direct you to another page, where the consequences of your decision will lead to a new dilemma, another choice, another page and so on – and finally to one or another of sixteen possible endings. The story of your life – your very survival and that of your family – will depend on how you make these "hungry decisions."

You are invited to work through each decision thoughtfully, trying to weigh the pros and cons of both alternatives. You may want to do this alone. Better yet, since in the story the choices are made by husband and wife together (though in some cultures the spouses would not share equally in these decisions), you might work through the process with a partner. Later you might share with a larger group your feelings about this family and your understanding of the difficulties they face. Discuss your hopes for a better life for hungry people and what you can do to help.

Of course, this story is fictitious and oversimplified. But "any resemblance to real persons, living or dead," is very intentional! The story is true, many times over. Perhaps as you take part in this story you will gain a greater sensitivity to your brothers and sisters around the globe, trapped by poverty and injustice, who are making these very decisions as you read.
