Health Emergency
Trisha Mae de la Paz is a 7-year-old girl living in the impoverished community of Tibag in the Philippines. Tibag is one of the fastest growing resettlement communities for the urban squatters from Manila’s slums. While earning barely enough to provide for the family, Trisha’s father lost his job. Shortly after both Trisha’s mother and sister required immediate surgery. When Trisha herself was diagnosed with severe Acute Tonsillar Hypertrophy requiring a tonsillectomy, her family was unable to find the necessary funds. Medical intervention appeared impossible.
Action Response
Due to the great need, Food for the Hungry’s Child Development Program began working in Tibag about a year ago. As a sponsored child, Trisha’s health was a priority to our staff. When they discovered Trisha’s condition and need for surgery, immediate action was taken. A doctor was found at the Makati Medical Center who would provide his professional service free of charge. The HEART fund was then used to cover the expense of the room, anesthesia and other medicines that were required. After a two-week recovery, Trisha was able to return to school.
