Lead a Change for Life Campaign

Through Change for Life, nickels, dimes and quarters will bring hope to those suffering from the AIDS crisis, one of the most severe health problems the world has ever faced.

When you get involved with Change for Life, Food for the Hungry will provide your church, Sunday School class, workplace or other group with small containers to collect spare coins for six weeks. As the containers fill up, the accumulation of pocket change will have a big impact:

• Supporting orphans and vulnerable children
• Reaching youth with Bible-based abstinence and faithfulness messages
• Teaching infected women how to prevent mother-to-child transmission
• Providing care for people living with HIV/AIDS
• Giving vulnerable families income-generating skills.

It’s easy to coordinate Change for Life, and it will be a great encouragement to your group to see how their small change can make such a big change in the fight against AIDS! Just follow these simple steps:

• Contact Food for the Hungry to let us know that you are planning to lead Change for Life. If you don’t have a Food for the Hungry contact person already, ask for Advocate Ministry at 1-800-248-6437 or contact us online. Food for the Hungry will help you determine how many containers you will need and will send you the appropriate number. We’ll also send you information cards you can pass out. If you’d like to download a pattern to create a container, click here. Be sure and print it onto card stock or other heavy cardboard paper.
• Find a group that you think would be interested in Change for Life. Consider your church, Sunday School, neighborhood, office and small group. Plan to host Change for Life for six weeks.
• Seek opportunities to publicize Change for Life — ask for a few minutes to share at your small group, church service or Sunday School class. Set up an information table and be available to answer questions and distribute the containers. Families and individuals will likely fill several containers during the course of six weeks, so have extra containers to give in exchange for filled ones.
• Consider finding a friend or business that would “match” whatever money is raised through your Change for Life event.
• If you are doing Change for Life at your church, plan to host a table the entire six weeks that you are leading Change for Life (if possible) in order to collect filled containers and distribute new containers. Some families and individuals may fill up several containers during the course of six weeks. If you cannot have a person present to receive the filled containers at a table or booth, arrange for a secure location where the containers can be dropped off .
• Once the change is turned in, find out if your local bank or credit union has a machine to sort and roll your coins. Some banks will do this for free. If no free services are available, ask for wrappers to roll the coins. Ask a few others to help sort, count, and roll the coins.
• Bring your rolled coins to the bank and ask for a cashier’s check made out to Food for the Hungry. You may also send the funds in the form of a personal check.
