Ending Extreme Poverty in our Lifetime

From 1981-2005, people living on $1.25 a day in extreme poverty decreased from 52 to 26 percent.

That happened in just 25 years.

Think of the possibilities for ending poverty during our generation…

58: Fast. Forward. The End of Poverty.

Food for the Hungry and other Christ-centered organizations have joined the 58: Alliance, a movement to help the more than 1.4 billion people still living in extreme poverty worldwide. Founded by Dr. Scott Todd, the 58: Alliance brings together experts in agriculture, water, micro-enterprise and other areas to help serve the poor.

The goal of the 58: Alliance is to combine fasting, praying and giving to follow God’s heart:

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter.” – Isaiah 58: 6-8

Indonesian farmers, like Amran and his son (pictured above), are learning to grow cocoa trees to produce fruit, profits, and the opportunity to expand his field to leave poverty behind. “I look forward to earning enough money, not only to care for my family,” says Amran, “but enough so that I can provide food for the orphanage, too. Because of the help I received from FH, my family and I have a bright future now.”

“Providing clean water to every person on earth is estimated at $20 billion. That’s a big number, but let’s put it into perspective: according to the National Retail Federation, Americans spent $41 billion during the 2009 Black Friday weekend (the weekend after Thanksgiving). In a single weekend, Americans spent twice what it would cost to provide clean water to every person on earth.”
