is God calling you?

What kind of people are we looking for to serve with Hunger Corps? Will we take anyone simply looking for an overseas experience, or do we field only the candidates with years of professional experience and educational training in international development? It is our conviction that there are certain personal attributes we should seek in any candidate for cross-cultural ministry. It is these attributes which will dictate the success and effectiveness of these candidates toward our God-given mission, and therefore rank highest in our consideration of a candidate.

Hunger Corps - Paula:

The desire to be a missionary was born in me when I was just a little girl. Sitting in the pews in Sunday school, I listened to stories of those around the world sharing the love of Jesus. It was a clear calling God had given me from the very beginning. I wanted to “go” right after high school graduation, but fortunately my dad insisted I get a college degree first. I had always been interested in health, so I pursued a degree in nursing. I finished my general studies while working with a Japanese church in Seattle, WA. That experience solidified my desire to go overseas. I loved being part of a different culture, and had never considered before that the possibility of going to Asia. I had always imagined myself in Africa or South America. But when the time came to make a decision of where to go, I found myself accepting the position of Health Manager for the Philippines. After getting my RN license in July 2006, I started the dream that had been mine for so long.

I heard of Food for the Hungry through my mom, who started working in the US office 3 years ago. She encouraged me to check out the Hunger Corps program and I was impressed with their philosophy of missions. I believed that a missionary is so much more than telling the Story of Jesus, but of transforming lives so that people are able to rise out of the grips of poverty. This holistic view is the foundation of Food for the Hungry.

In the Philippines, my role is multi-faceted. We train women in basic health, hold health events (medical/dental checkups, health and nutrition fairs, etc.), run feeding programs, and find sponsors for those in need of medical procedures or medication. We also partner with the community in doing sanitation projects or health education. I am transitioning into the role of Health Manager as the present one is soon leaving.
