Sudan Prayer Calendar

Week 1 - Government Leaders

  • Pray for Sudanese President Umar Hasan Ahmad al-Bashir as he attempts to restore peace. Since 1956, Sudan has known only 11 years of peace. The ongoing civil war between the mainly Muslim north and the animist and Christian south has devastated the south and resulted in famine. Thus far, peace talks have proven futile. Please pray for peace for this war-torn nation.
Week 2 - Churches
  • Pray that Christians stand firm under the persecution. Attempts to eliminate Christians have resulted in church bombings during services and destruction of hospitals, churches, schools and even villages.
  • Pray for unity within the church. Pray that the church would be able to stand in the gap as an example of reconciliation despite tribal boundaries and battle lines.
  • Pray that more people would come to know Christ. The majority of the northern population is Sunni Muslim. However, a small number have become disillusioned with the Islamic religion and have chosen to accept Christ. Pray that the number of converts would continue to increase and that the faith of these new Christians would run deep.
Week 3 - Families
  • Pray for the families in the Darfur region, devasted by years of civil and ethnic warfare, now facing the threat of malnutrition and disease. More than 2 million people are affected by what the world is considering the worst humanitarian crisis.
  • Pray for southern Sudanese children. Most children in the south have never had the opportunity to attend school. Many have been captured by warring tribes and forced to serve as slaves. Approximately 6,000 young men are still unaccounted for, and those who do escape are left traumatized. In Khartoum, an estimated 30,000 children have been left homeless and now reside in the streets. Pray that these children will know a hope and a future that only God can provide.
  • Pray for families torn apart by slavery. Somewhere between 60,000 and 200,000 people currently serve as slaves. Many of the people are captured in the south and forced to live in the north, eventually becoming completely displaced from their families. The willingness of some Western NGOs to buy back slaves may be further complicating matters. Pray that slavery will be stopped and that families will be reunited.
  • Pray that God will provide for families’ physical needs, especially in the south.
Since 1983, more than two million people have died due to war, genocide and famine. Although Sudan is rich in agricultural and mineral resources, many southern families have been devastated by ongoing war. An estimated 5 million have been affected and an additional 500,000 refugees have fled to neighboring countries.
Week 4 - Partners, Projects & People

  • Pray that God will bless the continuing relief efforts of ministries we partner with and will partner with for relief in the Darfur region.
  • Pray for the medical HIV/AIDS programs. Pray that God would use these programs to help the country physically as well as spiritually.
