Pray for all the government leaders of Cambodia, for their health and for wisdom in leadership. Pray specifically for King Norodom Sihamoni and Prime Minister Hun Sen as they oversee one of the world’s poorest countries. Pray that they would deal with their people with justice and compassion.
Pray that justice will be done in the prosecution of those involved in the mass killings during the Khmer Rouge regime. Only recently has the mechanism been put in place to bring to justice those involved in the "killing fields" of the late 1970s, when almost 2 million Cambodians perished, many from exhaustion or starvation, but many also from torture and execution for being “enemies of the state.” Pray that government leaders would oversee this process justly.
Week 2 - Churches
Thank God for the open door to the Gospel in Cambodia.
Thank God for sustaining His people in Cambodia, and pray that He would bless them with growth in numbers as well as spirit. The history of the church in Cambodia has been one of growth interspersed with persecution. The low points have been low, indeed—in 1979, after four years of Khmer Rouge rule, all but 200 Cambodians had bowed their knees to false gods. But God always remembered His people in this country. When the most recent persecution was lifted in 1990, as the government returned the right to Christians to function openly in society, only ten evangelical churches were operating in the country. Thank God for allowing His body to grow to where it currently numbers more than 2,000 evangelical churches with a membership of about 130,000.
Pray that God would strengthen the church leaders in Cambodia and that they would be trained in the basics of the Gospel. To pursue this goal, Food for the Hungry is teaching church leaders the Christian worldview and church ministry concepts. We are helping leaders of independent churches take care of their congregations by training them with Church-Based Theological Education (CBTE) materials to achieve Vision of a Community. We are setting up small-group Bible studies and using Harvest materials for key church members in the community. Please pray that God would bless these activities.
Week 3 - Families
Pray that God would remember Cambodian families who follow His name. Cambodia is one of the poorest countries, with 75 percent of the people earning their living from subsistence farming. Pray that God would keep His followers close to Him and that He would meet their physical needs as well as their spiritual needs.
Pray that families can keep themselves clear of the booming sex industry in Cambodia. This industry accounts for about 100 new HIV cases daily in this country lacking combative resources. Pray that God would empower His people not to yield to temptation from this illicit world and that He would allow families to remain intact.
Week 4 - Partners, Projects and People
Pray for the Food for the Hungry water-sanitation program. Because poor drinking water and poor sanitation cause high rates of infant mortality and morbidity, Food for the Hungry installed about 60 wells last year, fixed 20 wells, and provided 30 water filters. We also improved economic conditions by reducing time needed to get water. Pray that God will bless our water-purifying efforts with continued success.
Pray for our child-development program in the Chhuk District. In order to continue the holistic education program for children of six villages, we are increasing the number and quality of Christian groups, equipping local leaders with a biblical perspective, and equipping families to provide for the holistic needs of their own children. Pray that the children will continue to receive quality education and vocational training.
