 | THE BEGINNING With a clear ministry focus, Dr. Ward often was first on the scene of disasters and calamities, providing help and hope to the poorest and most needy survivors. When he flew to Haiti and astounded a high-ranking government official by donating $1,000 to help meet urgent disaster needs – Food for the Hungry was born. After maxing out his credit card to help suffering people around him, he returned to the States. Later, he sailed the South China Sea with Vietnamese refugees (also called the “boat people”) and helped them learn English. He also trained them for new jobs as soon as they docked on the coast of California. |
 | THE LEGACY What started out as a compassionate response to a hurting world by one man has developed into a vibrant ministry composed of more than 2,000 staff members who walk alongside the poor in more than 26 developing countries. Each one of them carries the same desire that inspired Dr. Larry Ward – to help people one life at a time. Dr. Ward passed away in 2003, but his legacy lives on through the millions of people whose lives and communities have been transformed by the organization he founded. |
 | PASSING THE TORCH When Dr. Larry Ward retired in 1984, the leadership baton was passed on to Dr. Ted Yamamori. When Dr. Yamamori retired in 2001, Benjamin K. Homan was appointed the new president of Food for the Hungry United States, with offices in Phoenix, Arizona.
