Hunger Corps Missionary: Chris Parker

In June 2000, Chris Parker answered God’s call to serve in Sucre, Bolivia, as a missionary engineer. Located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia. It’s a city with very few economic opportunities – even for professionals.

Most of the people in Sucre are ethnic Quechua; however, as a result of intermarriages with non-indigenous groups, the number of people with mixed ancestries has grown significantly over the years.

Many people in Sucre would say that they are religious, but most likely they have never owned a Bible, have probably gone to church a dozen times or less, and believe that their salvation is based on good works.

Chris came to Sucre as an engineer. Armed with the necessary technical skills and training, he has been instrumental in helping hundreds of people in Sucre have access to potable water and irrigation. Little did he know, however, that God would also use him to introduce Jesus, “the spring of living water,” to those who are spiritually thirsty. Through the weekly Bible studies at his home, Chris discovered a gift and passion for teaching God’s Word and helping new believers grow in their knowledge of God. He now plans to go to a Bible college to receive formal training to be a full-time pastor.

Chris rejoices at what God has been doing through these weekly Bible studies. People are realizing their need for a Savior. Their lives are being transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. And they are discovering their true identities as children and friends of God.

Chris himself finds that God is broadening his perspectives on some of the most important issues of life. Regarding poverty, he says: “Good education, sufficient resources, and efficient systems can help overcome poverty, but true community development can happen only when there is real transformation in the heart and soul of a nation's people.”

All over the world, we have more than 80 Hunger Corps missionaries like Chris Parker who walk with people in the hard places. They look to Jesus as the ultimate model of servanthood. Just as Jesus identifies with the poor, the broken and the forgotten, our Hunger Corps missionaries reach out to the least of all with love and compassion. They are “bridge builders,” working closely with churches, community leaders and families in bringing real hope in places where there’s little else to cling to.

Will you consider becoming a Hunger Corps missionary and taking this incredible, life-changing journey with God?

God is calling. Are you willing?
