An estimated 3.8 million people in Kenya are in urgent need of emergency food assistance, according to official reports, as the country emerges from prolonged drought. Poor seasonal rains have affected crop production, resulting in widespread food and water shortages, high food prices, and disrupted livelihoods in pastoralist communities. While the rains that came in November were an enormous blessing, the ramifications of prior livestock deaths and the food gap before harvest continue to create a food crisis.
Among the worst affected by the crisis are the pastoralists in the northern and eastern regions of the country, where the drought conditions have increased the incidence of livestock disease and deaths. Additionally, the rapid change in temperature and moisture level when the rains began led to even more livestock deaths. For some families it will take up to 10 years to recoup the losses they have experienced, as they struggle to meet their daily needs.
