KLOVE and Food for the Hungry team up for Haiti

FH LocationsAs tens of thousands of Haitians flee the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Food for the Hungry (FH) is targeting relief efforts in specific communities to mitigate further displacement and loss. The communities are: Bellevue La Montagne, Siloe, Kenscoff and Aux Cadets. There are more than 50,000 displaced people in these communities and more than 120,000 people are affected.

Current FH priorities include distributing food, blankets, plastic sheets for temporary shelter, solar flashlights, hygiene kits, water purification kits and cooking items. FH is also creating :child friendly" spaces in these locations to help children deal with the trauma.

Reporting from Port-au-Prince, FH communications staff Lindsay Branham said, "There are tons of people living under sheets and sticks in parks, yards or in the streets. People are scared to go back to their homes or they've lost their homes altogether. It's overwhelming to see the level of human pain and suffering."

Haiti ReliefOf the 26 Haitian staff FH has based in Port-au-Prince, every person was affected and most staff are sleeping on the street. Even as staff face great losses, they are working with the FH Emergency Response Unit to serve their neighbors.

Transportation remains very difficult. Roads are clogged with traffic.

The Haitian government estimates that 200,000 people have been killed, 250,000 injured and two million displaced by the earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010.
