02/22/2007 - Food for the Hungry delivers emergency food, water and medical care as Mozambique braces for Cyclone Favio
PHOENIX, AZ, February 22, 2007 – While heavy rains which resulted in widespread flooding of the Zambezi River have slowed, Cyclone Favio threatens livelihoods and crops as it approaches Mozambique. Food for the Hungry is partnering with Swiss-based Christian relief organization Medair and is implementing programs with World Food Programme and UNICEF to help those displaced by the floods. Our emergency efforts include:
- Emergency Food Distribution: More than 45 tons of food (cereal, beans and oil) has been delivered to help feed those displaced from their homes.
- Mosquito Net Distribution: Thousands of mosquito nets have been delivered, protecting the vulnerable from Malaria and other mosquito spread diseases.
- Latrine construction: Food for the Hungry is constructing latrines and providing hygiene education to prevent the spread of disease.
- Health & Nutrition: In partnership with doctors from Operation Blessing, health and nutrition services are being provided to those in IDP camps.
The flooding of Mozambique has gone largely unnoticed in the states, but there is great need. Food for the Hungry is strategically placed to help those displaced from their homes.
