The Need & the Ministry:
A landlocked country in west central South America, Bolivia straddles the central Andes Mountains. Nicknamed the "Rooftop of the World" because of its high elevation, it is bordered by Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Peru. La Paz is the capital and largest city. It is well endowed with natural resources, but the high costs of production, lack of investment, inadequate internal transport and a landlocked location have limited its development. Average annual family income is one-third less than the rest of Latin America. Only Haiti's average is lower in all of the Western Hemisphere. Spanish is the official language.
FHI began operations in Bolivia in 1978 with a child sponsorship program. In 1983, in response to a severe drought and famine, FHI implemented an emergency food relief program and then gradually moved from relief to development programs.
Concurrently, a strategic decision was made to concentrate its development efforts in the altiplano and highland valley regions of Bolivia. Hence, FHI’s activities have increasingly become more geographically-focused on the most food insecure provinces of Bolivia as well as program-focused to achieve impact in agricultural productivity and household nutrition.
