The Need & the Ministry:
Guatemala in located in Central America, bordered by Mexico (north), Honduras (south), the Pacific Ocean (west) and the Caribbean Sea (east). Most of the population lives between 3,000 and 8,000 feet above sea level, enjoying warm days and cool nights. Its population is the highest of any Central American country, and most of the people live in and around the capital, Guatemala City, and in the western highlands. Spanish is the official language, spoken by 60 percent of the people. Most of the rest speak one of the more than 20 Mayan languages.
FHI began working in Guatemala in 1976 after a devastating earthquake that killed more than 23,000 people. Today, FHI/G has strong programs in child development, education by extension, and scholarships. The emphasis of the programs is to provide the children and youth with the opportunity to develop their God-given potential to fulfill their Biblical roles as the future leaders, teachers, pastors, and parents of their communities. The education by extension program was begun so children in isolated rural areas could have access to education beyond sixth grade. Child Development Program (CDP) graduates are eligible to attend vocational school to learn a trade. FHI also has a discipleship program for Pokomchi church leaders to empower the church with a comprehensive Biblical life perspective and to give them the tools and skills to practice holistic ministry.
The Details
With over 42 percent of the Guatemalan population being
under the age of 14, the need for transforming children's ministry is
urgent. The potential to see a nation change is right before our eyes.
We ask you to partner with our staff as they minister to families and
children in the rural parts of Guatemala. This team will be involved
with a variety of activities to reach children and encourage their
parents in godly parenting practices. The ministry opportunities may
include Vacation Bible School, youth rallies, physical projects to
improve community development, or working with parents. The team will
most likely be assisting in the construction of a library/computer
station or a small kitchen for the community. Please join us as we
desire to see this nation changed!
