The Need & the Ministry
Kenya is a beautiful east African country named for Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa. It borders the Indian Ocean and Somalia (east), Sudan and Ethiopia (north), Uganda and Lake Victoria (west), and Tanzania (south). More than eight out of ten Kenyans live in rural areas, mostly farmers in dispersed settlements rather than villages. The remaining population is concentrated in the urban areas of Nairobi (the capital) and Mombassa. With one of the highest rates of population growth in the world, exacerbated by recurring drought, Kenya no longer is able to feed itself and imports large quantities of food.
In the early 1980s, Africa Inland Mission asked FHI to provide emergency food to people suffering from drought. This relief aid evolved into a Child Development Program. Because of the incredible need in this country, FHI launched a full-fledged development program focusing on agriculture, health, clean water, education, and spiritual ministry. People in Marsabit and Moyale are slowly improving their lives through participation in FHI’s program. However, the looming economic crisis likely will reduce the government’s financial assistance in these marginal areas, which are regarded as having limited economic benefit. This makes FHI’s work in the country more critical than ever
