This course is designed to give students hands on cross-cultural experience with community development work in the field. Students will be exposed to international development and relief programs, have the opportunity to work in cross-cultural work environments, and to contribute meaningfully to their assigned program. Students will begin to assess their own ability to live and work in cross-cultural settings as well as be introduced the challenges faced in the millennial development goals.

Please begin familiarizing yourself with the Practicum placement process. Your initial Practicum application is only step one in a process which requires you to also:
  1. explore the Millennial Development Goals (www.undp.org/mdg/basics.shtml) and familiarize yourself with the development needs in Uganda and the surrounding countries, see how your education and interest may align with these needs and the Millennial Develop Goals,
  2. draft your CV to bring with you to Uganda (a resume of your educational and life background that describes what resources you bring to the field),
  3. begin to articulate a learning objective for your practicum experience
  4. continue to refine your learning objective as you become more familiar with the needs and Millennial Goals, and
  5. apply for the placements which you feel fit your passions and exercise your gifts best, these opportunities will be presented by FH Country Directors at the Practicum field placement fair in Uganda

Step 1: practicum application

What development area interests you the most?
  • eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • achieve universal primary education
  • promote gender equality and empower women
  • reduce child mortality
  • improve maternal health
  • combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  • ensure environmental sustainability
  • global partnership for development

    After you have selected your development area, in your application, write a brief statement explaining your choice and submit with your application.

  • teaching & curriculum

  • ecology & naturalist observation
  • social work & psychology
  • medicine, health & wellness

    Before you arrive at the FHUS orientation, create an experience & education CV/resume.


    Step 3: practicum selection

    What placement opportunities best fit your skills & interests?
    During the practicum fair, you will be presented with available opportunities for your practicum placement. You will need to select three (3) options and then submit your CV and learning objective for each.
