This was the question FH founder. Dr. Larry Ward, asked himself more than 35 years ago. His response set the cornerstone for FH ministries ever since: "They die one at a time; we can help them one at a time." (Read more about our Relief & Development history.)

Today, Food for the Hungry has grown from one man’s vision to a ministry organization that circles the globe. While Relief and Development work remains critical to the FH mission, it’s one spoke in the broader FH ministry wheel.

FH has one goal: to end physical and spiritual hunger around the world. Relief and Development addresses this goal by helping people affected by wide-spread tragedy, such as famine, natural disaster, or war.

Relief and Development also takes us to hard places, bringing hope to many who face seemingly hopeless circumstances. "God calls us particularly to those places of poverty that are hurting and often unstable," says Food for the Hungry President Benjamin K. Homan. Our calling is to go to 'rocky terrain.' "If we wanted smooth paths, we would not venture into places such as Darfur (Sudan), Northern Uganda, Cambodia, Bangladesh and so many other places."

The Benet people are a small sub-group of the Sabinyas indigenous to the slopes of Mt. Elgon in Uganda. Stretching back to colonial times there has been a land dispute between the government and the Benet people over a strip of land at the base of Mt. Elgon National Park. Up till now the Benet people have been allowed to remain in the park living their traditional lifestyle.
