As the country with the lowest Human Development Index and one of the poorest nations in the world, Niger suffers chronic food insecurity problems. Last year, a regional drought coupled with a larger-than-usual locust infestation tipped the balance for many poor agriculturalists and pastoralists, forcing them to resort to “hungry season” activities of gathering wild foods and migrating to find casual labor for a longer period than other years.
In an effort to provide families in Niger with a more dependable water and pasture sources, FH is working with a local partner to construct dikes to improve pasture regeneration and raise the level of the groundwater in arid pastoralist areas, and to build enclosures to facilitate pasture management.
