the hunger ride
One man, one ride, one summer. "The first time I went to Ethiopia in January of 2004, it was the first time I really saw HIV and poverty like that. This is for real."
After two visits to Zeway in Ethiopia, Tom Rand came to believe that one person can make a difference. He believes that he can. Not because he is any more special than the rest of us, but because he is willing to try.
Tom, a teacher in Memphis, Tenn., will bike ride 1,700 miles from Canada to Mexico this summer. The 22-day trip begins June 1, 2007.
Why? Tom's experience in Zeway changed his life. Last year, he biked 3,400 miles across the country and raised $30,000 to help the children in this impovershed town. And now, through his second Hunger Ride, Tom hopes to continue reaching out to them in a tangible way.
While in Ethiopia, he often asked himself, "How can I help?"
The Hunger Ride is Tom’s way of saying, "I can make a difference." It is his way of taking a hobby and a passion and turning it into an avenue of hope for the children in Zeway, Ethiopia.
