Federal budget debate puts poor
at great risk

For Fiscal Year 2012, Congress is considering bills that make devastating cuts to funding for international relief and development. In recent years, direct aid to the global poor was less than one percent of the federal budget. Cutting this funding would have little or no impact on the federal deficit, but it would lead to more deaths, poverty, and international instability. While FH believes our country needs to be committed to fiscal responsibility and shared sacrifice, such sacrifices should not be made at the expense of the most vulnerable.
