What Is "Success" In the Fight To End Poverty?

One month into a new year! How are you doing on your resolutions? Making progress towards your goals? To me the first month of the year is always full of adrenaline. Boldly making changes or commitments to ensure we meet our new goals. Doing our best to arrange our lives to set ourselves up for success.

Then comes February. After a month of dedication, we now understand the full sacrifice needed to fulfill the resolutions and promises we made. In February we begin to ask the deeper questions about what we are seeking to accomplish.

What is success? Is success simply meeting the goal we made? Or the target we set? Or is it something bigger?

2015-01-30 10.58.13 amAt Food for the Hungry (FH), we have a lofty goal. We feel that God is calling us to end poverty. To see it eliminated from God’s creation. That will take some time, obviously! But we can gauge success as we journey towards that goal.

So what does success look like for FH in our pursuit of ending poverty?

2015-01-30 10.38.40 amSuccess is in the eyes and smiles of children.

It is in the visible relief of a father who now has a better opportunity to provide for his family after receiving a micro-loan from a community-based association FH helped start up.

It is in the laughter of a mother who understands the importance of hand washing and proper hygiene following a care group training.

It is in satisfying grin of a farmer who is able to yield more crops due to advanced and improved agricultural methods that FH was able to share.

It is in the renewed confidence of a community leader who has been able to coordinate a nearby potable water source for his village with FH’s help.

It is in the reassured focus of woman expecting her first baby that she now has a better understanding of how to take care of her child through a maternal-health lesson conducted by FH.

2015-01-30 10.55.39 amIt is in the proud smile of parents that see that their children are being taught the love of Jesus and how that should manifest itself through good manners, dedication and care for others.

It is in the excitement of a sponsored child when they receive a letter from their sponsor, letting them know that they are loved by family near and far.

We see success everyday. It is what encourages us to pursue the goal of ending poverty with inspired hope and focus. It is what invigorates us to make sure the work we are doing is impactful and of high quality. And it is what compels us to invite others to be a part of what God is doing through us. Join us as we strive for success in the goal to end poverty!
