Why our name is "Food for the Hungry"

When I say our name, Food for the Hungry, in conversation with new friends, I often hear the response, “Oh, so you’re a food bank or you distribute food.” Which is a pretty good guess. However, if you’ve been with us for awhile, you know our organization’s mission is ending poverty, together.

Poverty is complex. So in certain circumstances, yes, Food for the Hungry does distribute food. With our focus being on community transformation, we work with community leaders to have a holistic approach to addressing poverty. Depending on the community’s needs, we may provide access to clean water, education, health care, livelihood trainings and so much more.

Food for the Hungry was founded in 1971 by Dr. Larry Ward. (Meaning next year, in 2021, we’ll be celebrating our 50th year.) Ward felt an intensifying of God’s call to help the world’s most vulnerable people. The verse Psalm 146:7 stood out to him.

“He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free.” – Psalm 146:7

Dr. Larry Ward

Moved by a broken heart from seeing the reality of a hungry world and inspired by the Word of God to take action, Ward started Food for the Hungry.

A Hungry World

What our name does a good job of doing is calling attention to the fact that there are hungry people in need of food. We live in a hungry world. There are over 2 billion people who do not have regular access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food.

One of those families was the Caals in Guatemala. The children were eating a diet of only corn and beans and were missing key nutrients. Thanks to the generosity of folks like you, the family received vegetable seeds, agricultural help, training on planting and cooking practices, and ongoing community support. Margarita, the mother, started a garden and her kids now have a complete diet, including nutritionally-rich vegetables.

You can join us in spreading the word about how many people in our world are hungry. And by taking action, helping those who are in need. Now is the perfect time to have conversations with friends and family and invite them to also get involved. World Food Day is October, 16. The UN uses this day to spread worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure healthy diets for all.

Thank you for caring about the hungry people in our world as God has called us.
