Mozambique Emergency Response

Cyclone Freddy has destroyed homes, schools, roads, and health posts and in multiple provinces.

In the Caia district alone, where FH works, 14,714 homes were totally destroyed and at least 450 were flooded. FH is working to provide these families with shelter kits, enabling them to rebuild and return from temporary encampments on high ground to the  relative safety of their own homes. Projections indicate that more than 1 million people are affected.

Food for the Hungry is responding urgently to communities suffering in this disaster. Your generous donation assures that FH has the resources we need to continue this life-saving response! FH RESPONSE INCLUDES:
  • 5,000 people are receiving hygiene and sanitation training, including prevention of cholera and COVID-19.
  • 700 vulnerable households, including families of 876 sponsored children whose homes were severely damaged, received vouchers allowing them to purchase supplies locally to repair or rebuild their homes.
  • 1,000 hygiene and women’s dignity kits were distributed at FH Operational Posts
  • 1,000 households in two flood-affected communities in the Caia district are receiving urgently needed WASH services.

Gift Policy:
You may send small, flat paper-based items that can fit into a standard #10 size envelope, have a value of less than $5 dollars and weigh less than 4 ounces. We ask that you send small, flat items of this size because shipping is expensive and even small gift items can cause issues clearing customs.
You can send postcards or photographs, however, we ask that you visit here for more details about culturally appropriate guidelines for photos and other images. Please write the child’s ID # on the back of each item that you enclose with your letter to ensure that it reaches him/her.

  • Stickers (flat, paper-based, only a few at a time)
  • Paper-based simple bookmarks, stationery, drawing, or writing paper (single sheets)

Please note, all items should be compliant with airline transport and safety regulations. Gifts that don’t meet the gift policy will be donated to a local Christian non-profit organization in Phoenix, Arizona, that works with low-income families. We will not be able to return them.
