Carlos' Story: How Child Sponsorship Pays It Forward

Food for the Hungry (FH) staff member, Carlos Núñez, lives in the Dominican Republic and works at the FH office in the capital city of Santo Domingo. By all appearances, Carlos is a young, successful professional pursuing a calling to serve God and the most vulnerable through his work. He is part of an important mission, hosting church teams, engaging with FH’s generous donors, and sharing the story of how God is using Food for the Hungry to help end poverty. Carlos even sponsors a young boy in Uganda. His story is about how child sponsorship pays it forward.

But things could have been different.

You see, Carlos is a former sponsored child himself. Years ago, when he was a young boy, Carlos’ community was struggling. The roads weren’t paved. The schools did not offer the quality education that children needed in order to succeed. Even fetching water was a daily challenge for children like Carlos.

On the other side of the world, a generous family felt called to sponsor Carlos through FH. They started writing letters to Carlos, reminding him of Jesus’ love and encouraging him. Through Carlos’ sponsor and others, FH was able to begin helping Carlos’ community. For the next 13 years, FH supported families, children, and leaders. FH helped them build a stronger community, gain access to resources like clean water, and improve their schools.

And as Carlos grew up healthy, with access to education, and confidence in God’s love for him, God used sponsorship to show Carlos plans for his life.

“Today I am who I am because of what God did in my life, what God has done for our community, and because of how my sponsored family impacted my life.”

Today, Carlos is continuing the story of transformation by passing on the gift of sponsorship to a child in Uganda — a young boy not so different from the child that Carlos was not so long ago. As a leader in his family, community, and at Food for the Hungry, Carlos is a living example of how child sponsorship can change a child’s life and allow them to begin making a difference in the lives of others far into the future.

You can watch Carlos share his story in his own words below:

When you sponsor a child, you pay it forward to how God has blessed your own life! Consider making an eternal impact for a child in poverty today when you sign up to become a sponsor.
