Journey to Haiti
Some of my first thoughts as I journey to Haiti….
On the plane from Ft. Lauderdale to Haiti at 6:30 am. Without leaving the ground I have already seen many things that remind me of Kampala and the people and culture I love so much. A man on the plane wears two fedoras… One black and white strip for a fancy night out and a solid white on on top for his more casual look. Is this a savvy way to transport hats without the damage they are sure to endure in a checked bag? Or an interesting new trend that likely won’t catch on? Another man wears a blue ball cap and women’s sunglasses with rhinestones lining the sides. Plastic grocery bags filled with toys an toiletries fill the over Head compartments. Women dressed in Sunday best take their seat, big white hats, long floral dresses, and beautifully accented jewelry. I sport the same outfit I wore yesterday in 12 hours of travel. Awaking at 4:30 am to head the the airport, I’m lucky I came with all my clothes on the right parts o my body. The language is foreign but the smiles translate well and I feel welcomed.
The people of Haiti aren’t waiting for buildings to be built, for shops the be constructed. Where Ever there is a fence, a wall, or even a partial wall, merchandise is hung and business is being conducted. These inspiring entrepreneurs show their resilience, and determination …
“As long as there’s life… There’s hope.
Tan gen lavi gen lespina”
A tarp hangs over a giant freezer on the sidewalk. A young girl sweeps around the fridge tidying up their sidewalk shop. The people are hard at work, rebuilding… Homes, businesses, roads.
