Three Creative Ways to Change the World in 24 Hours

Do you have a desire to change the world and help those in need, but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone.

With more and more problems facing us every day, “changing the world” can feel like a big, nearly insurmountable task. It doesn’t have to be.

You don’t have to end world hunger, or build schools in developing countries, or donate half of your yearly salary to make a difference. You don’t even have to make a long-term commitment.

For many, wanting to change the world begins with a creative idea … and a desire to help others.

In fact, big changes usually happen by doing small things. No matter what we have to offer large or small — each one of us can make a difference.

By thinking outside the box, you can even make this difference in less than 24 hours!

We hope you will feel inspired by the creative ideas these Food for the Hungry (FH) supporters came up with to help raise funds for our programs worldwide.

Transforming Lives Through Livestreaming

Jacob and Robby grew up together as friends in the small town of Paris, Illinois. They both learned about FH through a friend who had been volunteering at concerts with FH artists. Jacob and his wife, Camille, even became child sponsors. The more they learned, the more they wanted to help.

Earlier this year, Jacob and Robby started a YouTube channel as they were both avid fans of different YouTube personalities. Then the COVID-19 pandemic began. After quarantine started in their small town and with more free time on their hands, they began brainstorming things they could still do to make a difference while at home.

They hatched a plan to help those in need through their YouTube channel — Anbrovies.

Jacob and Robby YouTube livestream

“We had a small subscriber base of about 30 people, but we thought, ‘You know what, let’s try a livestream fundraiser anyway.”

They promoted the 24-hour livestream beforehand on their channel and on their personal social media accounts. They set a goal of $1,000, but only expected to raise between $250 and $300.

The 24-hour charity livestream started at 5 p.m. on a Friday and lasted through Saturday. They set up donation tiers from $5 to $100 and came up with a list of things they would do for each tier level. For example, for $5, someone could change the temperature in their office. Or for $100, Robby and Jacob each had to eat a ghost chile. For $25, they each ate a spoonful of kimchi, and so on. Anytime a new donation came up, they had to repeat these tasks.

While the 24 hours seemed to last a long time, the reward was sweet. At the 18-hour mark, they reached their goal of $1,000!

They even had the opportunity to share about how their viewers donations were helping the most vulnerable in our world. Every two hours Jacob and Robby shared about FH’s work and perused our website so their friends and family could learn more.

In a separate recording, Jacob and Robby shared their screen with their viewers to show their donation being given to FH’s Where Needed Most fund. By giving to this fund, FH is able to respond to urgent needs around the globe, offering lifesaving support, especially during this unprecedented time.

Fasting for a Cause

Julie, an FH child sponsor and church member of Quest Fellowship Church in Garner, North Carolina, witnessed a unique way to help end poverty through the church’s high school youth group. The youth group had always sponsored four children through FH, but over the years the budget decreased and they were unable to continue sponsoring. The new youth group pastor at the time decided to get creative and encourage the teens to raise the funds needed to continue sponsoring. So, they decided to host a one-day fundraising fast.

Their goal was $1,500 and 30 kids participated. To fundraise, the teens had to share their cause with others in the community and ask for pledges.  During the fast, the teens also participated in community service and work projects throughout the town. They all broke the fast together on Saturday night with a pizza party. During the party, they brought in their fundraising forms and tallied up the pledges.

They had collectively raised close to $5,000!

They were able to continue sponsoring four children and had extra to donate to the community.

Sacrificing meals for less than one day meant changed lives for many in a small community on the other side of the world! Learn more about FH child sponsorship today.

Blessing Others on Your Birthday

Just as the youth group from Quest Fellowship Church and Robby and Jacob have shown, there are endless creative ways you can use your influence to change the world. This one might be the most simple, yet incredibly effective.

You can help those living in poverty by pledging your birthday through Facebook!

Your birthday may only be 24 hours, but we it still has the capacity to do big things. When you ask your friends and family to donate to FH on your behalf, instead of giving traditional birthday presents, you’re also giving them the opportunity to be a part of this change. The impact of their gifts and your “sacrifice” will have an incredible impact that lasts much longer than one day.

We can’t think of a better way to celebrate.

You can even host a Facebook fundraiser for any occasion — like 9-year-old Kaia did.

While shopping the FH Gift Catalog one year, she asked if her parents would give her $171 dollars to pay for deworming medication for 2,000 children and a water filter … but her mom Breanna had a better idea.

They would match whatever amount Kaia could raise on her own.

Breanna wanted her to know that she has the ability to raise the money and change the world herself.

Kaia accepted the challenge. Breanna helped her film a video that they posted to launch a Facebook fundraiser — where Kaia would give desserts and crafts to anyone who wanted them in exchange for their donation.

In the end, Kaia raised $3,867! This amount got her so excited she jumped off the couch, ran across her yard, and spun around with her hands in the air.

Kaia might be young, but she’s already changing the world with the compassion for others in her heart. And you can too!

Check out our step-by-step guide to set up your Facebook fundraiser today.

We love seeing the different ways our friends and supporters help change the world through their creativity! And we hope you feel inspired to brainstorm a few different ways yourself. Thank you for your heart for the most vulnerable in our world as we work to end poverty, together.
