Karen Neiswender-Calani

From an early age, Karen has always had a heart for missions. While in nursing school at Seattle Pacific University, Karen participated in several short-term mission trips to Central America. She knew God was calling her to use her nursing skills in Latin America. Joining Food for the Hungry in 2000, she went to Guatemala as a Hunger Corps Missionary. There, she worked with national staff to address health needs of school-age children in various communities as part of the Child Development Program.rnrnIn 2007, Karen received a Master’s in Public Health at UNC, Chapel Hill. Since 2007, she has provided health support to the Child Development Program on a global level, and coordinated a water filter study in Cochabamba, Bolivia (where she met her husband, Rodolfo Calani). Now, Karen is a Health & Nutrition Specialist supporting Child-Focused Community Transformation. She also coordinates the work of FH’s Ministry Services Teams – internal working groups focusing on different development sectors such as health, agriculture, child education and gender/protection.rnrnRodolfo has worked with FH Bolivia in Monitoring and Evaluation of various programs, including Food Security and the Chagas Project, for 12 years. Rodolfo has a degree in Computer Science, and also supported FH Bolivia with its information technology needs.rnrnRodolfo and Karen were married in April 2011, and welcomed Robert Luis to the family in September 2012. Recently, Rodolfo, Karen, and Robert moved to Guatemala City, Guatemala, where Rodolfo will be supporting FH Guatemala’s monitoring and evaluation and IT needs as the Monitoring & Evaluation Assistant and National IT Coordinator. Karen continues to support FH’s Child-Focused Community Transformation model development from home while keeping up with Robert.rnrnPlease prayerfully consider supporting Karen’s work in FH with a special gift or as a monthly supporter.
