Lauren Woodside-Alegre

I (Lauren Woodside-Alegre) was raised in a Christian family and through the teaching and example of my parents, as well as countless Sunday school teachers and mentors; I grew to love Christ as my Lord and savior. During my freshmen year at Pacific Lutheran University, while on a Spring break mission trip to Mexicali, Mexico, I first felt God’s call to serve the poor. This experience led me to continue studying Spanish and also sparked an interested in learning more about International Development. After graduating from PLU with Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Global Studies, I was blessed with the opportunity to volunteer at Casa Asis, an orphanage in Nicaragua. As I witnessed how sharing the love of Christ changes lives, God used my experience at Casa Asis to confirm my desire to serve the poor and minister to people in other cultures, but I wasn’t sure how or where to put my skills to use for God’s kingdom. After returning from Nicaragua, I received my Master’s in Teaching in 2004, from the University of Washington, and began teaching biology in a public high school. While I enjoyed working as an educator and mentor to the students in my classes, I continued to feel a call to minister to people and communities in Latin America. In 2006, God opened the door for me to begin serving with Food for the Hungry in Peru. Since then I have had the privilege of working in a variety of roles: training community health promoters, coordinating FH-Peru’s earthquake relief and rehabilitation projects in Chincha, as well as helping with the planning, and implementation, of different projects in the national office. In March 2016, God called me (and my husband and two children) to return to the US for a season. Working from Washington state, I currently serve as the Global Disaster Risk Reduction Coordinator, supporting the mission of Food for the Hungry in more than 18 countries.
