Eight-year-old Ovijit knows what it means to face hardship. His home in Bangladesh was in the path of Cyclone Remal—a deadly storm that left destruction and despair in its wake.

But thanks to sponsors like you, Ovijit and his community didn’t have to face this storm alone. “What do you do when a cyclone is about to hit?”

House shelter damage in bangladesh
When Cyclone Remal hit the coast of Bangladesh in May 2024, gale-force winds and heavy rains destroyed children’s homes and devastated their communities.

Ovijit remembers the fear as the storm warnings grew more urgent.

He lives in a riverside village of 4,400 people prone to storm surges and cyclones.

But he could see this was a big storm. Dark skies. Roaring winds.

Cyclone Remal was bearing down with devastating force.

Where do you run?

Because of your generosity, Ovijit’s mother Sathi knew exactly what to do.

“I knew how to protect my family and community,” says Sathi, grateful for the disaster response training that sponsors like you had helped provide.

As soon as local authorities raised the cyclone alert, Sathi and her husband, Suman, gathered up Ovijit and his sister Meghla and raced to the local cyclone shelter.

This cyclone struck with devastating force, but they were safe.

And because of the kindness and care of child sponsors, families received fresh water and food like Khichuri (rice mixed with lentils and vegetables), right when they needed it most.

Because of your love, a warm meal was waiting for families who lost everything.

But nothing prepares you for the shock of seeing your home gone.

The next morning, as the winds died down, they returned home to find their house badly damaged.

“I was feeling very upset and helpless because I had no money to repair my house,” says Sathi.

You made sure families weren’t left feeling homeless and alone.

In the cyclone’s wake, child sponsors provided emergency food, clean water, and more. You helped families rebuild their homes and get children safely back to school.

Young Ovijit says with gratitude: “I am very happy to live in my new house! I am also very happy to continue my education!”

Cyclone Remal devastated Patakata village in Bangladesh, leaving many, including mother-of-two Sathi Rani, with severely damaged homes.
Ovijit and his mother Sathi are so grateful for all the support they’ve received to survive the storm and build back stronger.

Your kindness and care was there …

… Helping families prepare for disaster, survive the storm, and recover with the courage, skills, and confidence to build back stronger than ever before.

Knowing that someone like you is standing with them for the long haul gives sponsored children and their communities the resolve to succeed, even when they face setbacks.

“My hopes for my family and community are that we continue to grow stronger together, with each member enjoying good health, gaining education, and finding fulfillment in life,” says Sathi.
