Reflections on Devex World: A Better Normal?

A month on from Devex World 2022, and how are we doing? Close to 1000 leaders, practitioners, thinkers and funders converged in Washington DC in July to wrestle with and unpack this year’s theme, “Creating a Better Normal.” Double that number attended online to participate in a packed and varied agenda. The better normal for […]

Growing as Parents with the Word of God

God’s Word isn’t silent on the subject of parenting. That’s especially helpful for families in Peru, where family violence is a cultural norm. When Reynalda, a mother of two in Peru, was given a Bible from Food for the Hungry (FH) as part of their work in her community, it opened doors for her. She […]

FH Ethiopia Staff Provides Food in Midst of Conflict

The conflict in northern Ethiopia has displaced nearly 2 million people, making an already dire food situation all the more precarious. The effects of drought and a changing climate only add to the pain and suffering. Supply routes have been cut, leaving people without any food access for more than a year.  But a daring […]

From Sleepless Nights to Hope-Filled Future

Today, Rith looks at her family’s future filled with hope. She believes her children will one day escape poverty for good and achieve their God-given potential. But she didn’t always feel this way. Stress, anxiety, and worry consumed this vulnerable mom’s heart that she literally could not sleep at night. Rith and her children live […]

If you would have asked the families that live in Barangay Osmeña, a farming and fishing village on the island of Samar, such an outcome might […]

The Many Blessings of Water

When a family or community gains access to a well, pipeline, or other quality water source for the first time, it means clean, safe water for everyone to drink. And that is essential to health and quality of life. But it means so much more. It brings clean, accessible water for cooking, cleaning homes, and […]

Faith-based Organizations Need to Embrace Gender Equity, Equality

In Psalm 139, David wrote: “For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You because I have been fearfully and wonderfully made.” All human beings, regardless of their social status, ethnicity, gender, or life experiences, should be treated with dignity and respect. For […]

Well Repair in a Drought Delivers Clean Water

What do you do if you need an emergency plumbing or well repair? You quickly call your local plumber or well service provider. Help is on the way. It didn’t work that way for Tune, a mother living in rural Kenya. A deep water well – or borehole – broke in her community. There was […]

Mothers Empower Girls to Stay in School

Around the globe, extreme poverty holds mothers and girls back in so many ways. For instance, in countries like Bangladesh, adolescent girls are often forced into arranged marriages to alleviate the “burden” they have on financially strapped parents. As a result, these girls have to stop playing with their friends, attending school – and stop […]

Why Indigenous Women are Key to Climate Resilience

This Earth Day, I’ve been thinking a lot about Guatemala’s indigenous women and girls – not only about the adverse effect climate change has on their lives, but also the potential they have to transform their communities to be resilient to those effects. Development practitioners in Guatemala may have heard the saying, “The face of […]
