Former Sponsored Child: See Where Borann is Now

From struggling with self-confidence to becoming a Literacy Program Teacher—Borann, a former sponsored child, shares how a sponsor like you helped her grow, learn, dream, and succeed. Today, she’s empowering others in her community through education, proving that with support, courage, and determination, anything is possible.

On the verge of losing her education

Growing up in poverty in Cambodia, Borann faced many challenges that shrank her confidence and limited her opportunities for the future.

Poverty almost forced Borann’s parents to pull her out of school and go work to help her family survive.

But everything changed for Borann when someone generous like you answered God’s call and became her sponsor.

Discovering her confidence

“Sponsorship gave me the courage to teach, grow, and believe in myself,” says Borann.

Borann used to struggle with self-confidence. She was shy and rarely spoke up. She didn’t have the chance to participate in many community activities, so it was hard for her to develop her communication and leadership skills.

Her parents also knew little about child health, sanitation, and the value of education. This made it harder for Borann and her siblings to stay healthy and in school as they were often needed to work to help support the family.

When Patricia from Texas decided to sponsor 10-year-old Borann, she helped open doors to a future filled with opportunities.

“When I was a Sponsored Child, my sponsor sent me a letter inquiring about the weather and expressing concern for my well-being. They offered prayers for my family’s health and prosperity, while also encouraging me to pursue my studies in order to achieve my dreams. My sponsor who wrote me the letter of encouragement, helped my confidence, inspired me to pursue personal development, and instilled in me the courage to contribute to my community development.”

Borann’s parents also learned how important education is to breaking the cycle of poverty. With their support and her loving sponsor’s, Borann was able to stay in school. She also got the chance to learn new skills, including how to lead change for children in her community.

Borann is greatly inspired by her mother and says that she consistently motivates her to pursue her studies with greater diligence.

Although Borann says she lacked confidence, she wasn’t short of courage. She jumped in to help at her local children’s club and was invited to mentor other children.

Slowly, Borann’s hope and belief grew that once day, she could become the teacher she dreamed of.

From Doubt to Determination

Although Borann had a passion for teaching and the support of her parents and sponsor, she still faced obstacles. Some members of her community questioned her choice to teach and others questioned her performance at school.

At times, Borann doubted herself too. But she refused to let her doubts define her future. Borann knew that education had the power to change lives. She knew the difference it had made in her own.

“My sponsor motivates me to cultivate greater courage in my efforts to improve my community and assists me in achieving my goal of becoming a Literacy Program Teacher. If I meet my sponsor today, I will take the opportunity to ask about their well-being and express my gratitude for their encouragement in supporting my community. Additionally, I will extend my wishes for their prosperity and the happiness of their family.”

Borann studied hard. With dedication and determination, she completed Grade 12 and graduated from school! Today, she is a Literacy Program Teacher, helping learners gain life-changing reading and writing skills.

Borann says that her sponsor motivates her to be more courageous in her efforts to improve her community and supported her in achieving her goal.
