What do a small group in Albuquerque, three girls in Alabama, and a mom in Wisconsin have in common?   They’re making room for joy, love, and meaning that will last far beyond the season.   We hope their stories inspire you to give together, get your kids involved, and honor your loved ones with gifts that let God’s love overflow.

1. Making room for JOY: when friends give together

Jeff and Cathy’s small group at Sagebrush Church What happens when friends gather to give together?  For Jeff and Cathy’s small group at Sagebrush Church in Albuquerque, it’s called the Joy Jar  Joy Jar All year long, members drop in gifts of love. Last Christmas, they opened the Food for the Hungry Gift Catalog and used the Joy Jar to give gifts of love together: four Veggie Gardens and six Family Bibles!   “That exhausted all but $4 of the Joy Jar funds,” Jeff says. What life-changing generosity.  Giving together multiplies joy. And it helps you make an even bigger impact for children and families as we celebrate the One whose birth brings joy to the world!  Here are two life-changing gifts your group or family could give together:

2. Making room to LOVE others: Kids helping kids!

Everley and Edith

Once upon a Christmas, three sisters from Alabama had an awesome idea.

They opened the Food for the Hungry Gift Catalog and got excited. “Look! You can give a goat!” said Eleanor. “Chickens too!” added Everley. “And clean water!” squealed Edith.

They really wanted to help kids around the world with gifts of love. But how?

Not just by asking Mom for money. They wanted to do something!

So they got crafty and creative, and made Christmas ornaments to sell!

Edith

String, glitter, ribbons—everywhere. (And a little too much hot glue according to their mom Jocelyn.)

These kind girls stepped up to sell their ornaments to friends and neighbors. Five dollars each. The money added up fast. Now came the fun part:

Picking gifts from the catalog!

a new family Christmas tradition

That’s how three little sisters formed a new family Christmas tradition to make

and give gifts to help other kids.

Every goat, every chicken, every drop of clean water shows God’s love in action. Kids helping kids!

Imagine the good you can do by inspiring the children in your family to make room for gifts like these:

3. Making room for MEANING with gifts that keep giving

Instead of wrapping more “stuff,” Mary in Wisconsin gave chickens in honor of a loved one. A gift that changes lives far beyond Christmas morning.

At Christmas time, Mary’s family of 30 gather for their annual gift exchange. “We each bring a wrapped gift, and we each get to choose one from the pile,” she says.

Last year, Mary tried something different.

“I wrapped up a ceramic rooster and hen in a box along with a card explaining I’d given a gift of chickens from the Food for the Hungry Gift Catalog in honor of whoever chose my gift.

“My daughter picked my gift. She was thrilled!”

Mary wrote a letter to share her story, saying, “It is more joyful to give than receive.”

Here are two gifts to help you honor your friends and family in ways that last way beyond Christmas.

Chickens for Kids

This gift CHICKS all the boxes! Two chickens laying nutritious eggs, with extra to sell at the market for family income. No wrapping needed!

Food in a Crisis
