“I want to become a doctor in the future, supporting many sick people, my family, and my community,” says 10-year-old Adan in Kenya.
But right now, he’s battling for his own life as ongoing drought forces him and his friends to drink disease-ridden dam water.
“We only have clean water from the rains,” says Adan. “It hasn’t rained here since May! So every morning and afternoon we have to get our water from the dam, but it is not clean.”
“Without water at school, we are struggling so much. If I don’t have water to drink, I can’t concentrate in my class.”
With no water at school, Adan and his classmates have no choice but to get water from the dam. It makes them sick, miss school, and keeps them trapped in poverty. And it’s also putting their lives on the line.
Snakes lurk nearby. And the dam’s slippery banks are treacherous for children who can’t swim. Tragically, some children have drowned, and others have been bitten by snakes.
“I get nervous going to the dam. I’m scared of falling into the water and drowning,” says Adan. “Children have lost their lives.”
“If my school had clean water, I could study well, finish high school and college, and become a doctor.”
Adan lives with his grandmother who says:
“I’m trying all my best to ensure Adan goes to school and has a flourishing life… But recently, Adan was absent for two days because of stomachache due to the dirty water.
“If clean water would be found, I will be very happy, because water is life.”
She’s right, of course. Because once you have clean water, everything changes…
