Former Sponsored Child: See Where Ammy is Now

From facing financial hardship to becoming a confident teacher – Ammy, a former sponsored child, shares how a sponsor like you helped her overcome challenges, pursue an education, and discover her passion for teaching. Today, she’s living proof of what’s possible with a little help and a lot of love and determination.

Ammy’s Story of Resilience and Purpose

In the heart of one of the most vulnerable neighborhoods in the Dominican Republic, a young girl named Ammy was growing up with big dreams.

But like other children in her community, many opportunities were outside her reach.

What set Ammy apart was her unwavering faith, the strong values her parents instilled in her, and the faith-in-action of a loving child sponsor like you.

Longing for a Sponsor

At seven years old, Ammy longed for a sponsor. She’d heard all about Food for the Hungry’s sponsorship program at school.

Many of her classmates already had a sponsor who sent them letters and practical messages of love and support. She saw how having a sponsor gave them a sense of belonging and hope.

Love in Action

Ammy will never forget the day she found out that a family in the USA had decided to sponsor her. It was the start of a life-changing connection with a family who Ammy felt truly cared about her.

“Sponsorship changed my life because I knew that people outside my country were interested in knowing about me,” Ammy says.

“It was very motivating, very inspiring—for someone who doesn’t know you to speak to you with such love, wanting to know who you are.”

Through heartfelt letters and generous support, Ammy’s sponsor and their family deeply encouraged her. Their words of love and faith in action motivated her to dream bigger.

The love and care of a sponsor like you nurtured Ammy physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Through sponsors like you, Ammy received mentorship, prayers and support from her sponsors, and educational opportunities, which led her to study at one of the country’s top Centers of Excellence.

Ammy has maintained an outstanding academic record.

“I learned that discipline was crucial, and that studying would open doors for me,” she says.

“Now, I get to inspire children every day, just like my sponsor and teachers inspired me,” says Ammy.

Becoming a Leader

One of Ammy’s greatest challenges was breaking the stigma that nothing good can come from a vulnerable neighborhood.

Too often, young people from her community were underestimated. But she refused to accept that negative thinking.

“I have always believed in the power of transformation. When you invest in a child, you don’t just change their life—you change a generation,” she says.

Today, Ammy is not only a social worker and mentor. She is also actively involved in politics, determined to create policies that genuinely help communities like hers.

She now serves as the Youth Coordinator for the Mayor’s Office and is President of the Youth Leaders Network in Santo Domingo.

Ammy wants to give back and help children who are just like she once was—to show them that they are capable, loved, and full of potential.

Day in and day out, Ammy is empowering young people to believe in their potential and take action.

Hope that Goes Full Circle

Ammy says she is applying the lessons she learned through child sponsorship in  every aspect of her life.

“I believe in giving freely what I have freely received,” she says.

Her sponsor’s love has gone full circle. Ammy now mentors children in her community and partners closely with her local Food for the Hungry team.

Her goal? To ensure more children in vulnerable communities see a future beyond their current circumstances. To flip the odds from poverty to possibility.

A Flourishing Force for Good

As Ammy looks ahead, she sees a future where young leaders rise up to bring meaningful change.

She is determined to complete her degree and is preparing to run for city council in 2028. She plans to transform her nation’s politics into a force for good.

"I want to be a voice for my community, to advocate for children and families who face the same struggles I did,” says Ammy.

Ammy also gives back by being part of programs that help disadvantaged youth. Like you, she understands that when young people are empowered, the future is brighter.

A Sponsor’s Love Can Ignite a Lifetime of Purpose

With the love and support of her sponsor, and her unwavering faith and resilience, Ammy has become a role model for young people in her community and beyond.

She is proof that extraordinary leaders can emerge from the toughest, most vulnerable places.

“If I had my sponsor in front of me, I would say thank you,” Ammy says.

“I have always believed in the power of transformation. When you invest in a child, you don’t just change their life—you change a generation,” Ammy says.
