What Is Poverty?

Rohingya poverty village

Have you ever wondered whether you are poor? It’s not a simple question to answer, since definitions vary greatly. According to one online calculator, a family of four earning $26,000 per year is richer than 78.5% of the world’s population. However, according to guidelines used in the US, that same family falls below the poverty […]

We Need to Stop Talking About a Refugee Crisis

Since I was a child, I have always been interested in poetry. At the beginning of the Syrian revolution in 2011, which turned into a conflict in less than a year, I began reading the translated books of Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet. I soon came across a sentence that made no sense to me […]

Rumman is a 7-year-old boy who lives with his mother and younger sister in the Jhilim community of Bangladesh. Until recently, his community was not  practicing healthy habits regarding hygiene. Rumman’s father lives and works as a mason some distance away in the capital city of Dhaka. Occasionally, he returns to their community when he […]

Bengali Woman Transformed into a Leader

Jorina is now a leader in her community, helping to improve health, education, and cooperation.

Jorina was once depressed and without hope, but this young Bengali woman transformed into a leader and an agent of change when she teamed with Food for the Hungry (FH). Jorina’s village in Bangladesh was enmeshed in poverty. There was no safe drinking water, no sanitary latrines, no understanding of health, hygiene, or nutrition. As […]

Mothers Empower Girls to Stay in School

Around the globe, extreme poverty holds mothers and girls back in so many ways. For instance, in countries like Bangladesh, adolescent girls are often forced into arranged marriages to alleviate the “burden” they have on financially strapped parents. As a result, these girls have to stop playing with their friends, attending school – and stop […]

Safe Water and Much More Arrives with a Well

Nargis Begum, mother of two, washes laundry in clean water provided by the tube well FH installed near her home.

Safe water was what Nargis needed. The 28-year-old mother lives in the Borobogi community of Bangladesh. But for so long, she didn’t understand how many of her problems were tied to her family’s need of clean water. Like so many other families near their home, she and her two children – Siam, 12, and Fatema, […]

Ethiopia landscape

Have you ever felt as if you were at “the ends of the earth?” Maybe you were physically far away from anything familiar to you. Or perhaps you felt terribly distant–spiritually or emotionally–from God and others.  Where can we turn when we feel isolated? Dr. Larry Ward, who founded Food for the Hungry (FH), kept […]
